Prayer Vigil at ICE Detention Center Puts Spotlight on Human Cruelty

On September 28th, a wide range of faith leaders stood in support of immigrant families whose loved ones are being detained by ICE at the Delaney Detention Center in Newark. Our own Rev. Annie Allen invited many NJ Association church members and clergy to a prayer vigil over the terrible conditions hundreds of detainees endure while being held at the privately-run ICE facility.

Churches represented at the vigil include: the United Church of Christ, Presbyterian USA, United Methodist, the Roman Catholic Church, and the Episcopalian Church. Additional allied organizations included: Faith in NJ, Pax Christie, First Friends of NJ and NY, Envision Freedom Fund, and others.

Not only did several of the present faith leaders lead the crowd of over
6o attendees in prayer, there were also songs of worship and calls for
positive political action.

In recent months, a coalition of local volunteers has sprung up to support visiting families who must wait for long periods of time in harsh weather conditions to be let in to visit their loved ones in detention. These groups and individual volunteers provide food, water, umbrellas, chairs, children comfort toys, and clothing to meet the detention center’s dress code for visitors.

The RCC is proud to be among these volunteers, as we collect crucial supplies and deliver them to Delaney Hall when needed. As long as our neighbors, friends, family and community members are persecuted by the this abusive administration, we will be there to aid and protect them.

“The Hebrew-Christian tradition calls for love of strangers and foreigners. Mass deportation goes against our faith values, and we must stand witness to the inhumane treatment of detainees and their families at Delaney Hall. The Geo Group is making millions off of ICE detainees, many of whom receive no due process of law and are law abiding citizens,” says Rev. Allen. “We cannot stand by silently.”
