Reflecting on Psalm 121: Protected by God

At a time when the United States is indiscriminately dropping bombs on foreign countries, when armed military have been deployed to U.S. Cities, and ICE is roaming the streets of our neighborhoods, it is natural to feel unsafe and unprotected. This week, I turn my heart to Psalm 121—a profound and enduring song of trust in God’s protective presence.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

These ancient words echo across centuries, inviting us to contemplate the assurance and hope that comes from being held in divine care. In a world filled with uncertainty, injustice, disease, violence and change, Psalm 121 reminds us that God’s protection is not passive, but active—a living promise that journeys alongside us.

The psalmist does not deny the realities of hardship, everyone has suffered some loss, illnesses, challenges and change. But the Psalmist proclaims that God “will not let your foot be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber.”

God’s guardianship is vigilant and unceasing, embracing us through the complexities of our lives and the challenges we confront, both as individuals and as a collective. Knowing that ultimately, it is our Divine Power that protects us from harm, we become empowered, emboldened, and called to participate in the work of justice, inclusion, and compassion. And by leaning on our Faith, we can become protectors of others.
