One consistent theme in all faith traditions is God’s concern for those who are marginalized or vulnerable in their society. In the Hebrew and Christian Bibles, this was often the widow, the orphan, the stranger, the lame, the sick and the poor. Our faith calls us to shine God’s light into the darkness of neglect and persecution.
Today, the most vulnerable people in our society and abroad are under attack. Moreover, the environment and planet itself is under attack as well. Basic human rights are being violated. Immigrants are being kidnapped, detained and deported to parts unknown. The poor are being stripped of basic food security and healthcare. Institutions of higher learning, our public schools, scientific agencies, the arts and institutions charged with protecting consumers, the land and environment, the State Department, charged with peaceful international relations and others have all been defunded at record low levels, rendering them ineffective or non-existent.
There is no one in the government to save us! But there is one who has all power – the Creator of all things, the Spirit that flows through us and the wisdom of the prophets, Jesus and the apostles to guide our paths.

The only way to defeat the fascist ideology that has taken over our federal government and some of the general population and American culture, is to join in and help build a broad-based mass movement. This means partnering and supporting other organizations.
By joining forces with the Peace movement, Environmental movement, Labor organizations, Immigration Rights groups, and many other special interest groups, the American people will be strong enough to topple the billionaire class that fuel the Trump puppet and his cohorts.

“When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, say something! Do something! Get in trouble, good trouble, necessary trouble.”
- Representative John Lewis
Our circumstances require us to respond in whatever ways we can and on the issues that speak particularly to us. No matter how young or old, God has bestowed each of us with gifts or talents.
Everyone has something to contribute: Phone calls, letters, administration, financial support, attending meetings or protesting in the streets. We do what we can. As we do so, even while we create room for self-critique, we are invited to be generous and patient with ourselves and others as we seek to navigate as wisely as possible these challenging times.
